FCBOE Work Session - December

The Fulton County Board of Education met for their monthly work session at 3 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2021.
  • The FCS Board of Education begins with the Pledge of Allegiance and motions to begin the meeting. 

  • Roswell High School and Vickery Mill partnered up and wanted to thank everyone who made Shop With a Hornet successful. 

  • At Creekview Elementary, the student council held their annual food drive and were able to donate over a hundred boxes of canned food.

  • Milton High School is in the state football championship, and will play in the Georgia State Arena

  • Medlock Bridge’s math team competed in the tristate perennial math competition

  • Riverwood High School’s girls flag football team made it to the final four

  • Board President and District 7 Board Member Julia Bernath recognizes that today is the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor and thanks veterans for their service

  • Chief Talent Officer Ron Wade discusses the overall situation regarding COVID-19 in the district, stating that it is positive and decreasing. All students 5 and up can get the first dose of the vaccines, and everyone 18 and up can get boosters.

  • Dr. Ryan Moore talks about improvements and recommendations for the tiered flexibility model for school reviews including mental health support and TAG models.

  • District 4 Board Member Franchesca Warren asks Moore what he plans to do in order to assist students with immediate mental help.

  • District 5 Board Member Linda McCain asks Moore about the process for schools to reapply for the TAG process and suggests tracking the process using a balance score card.

  • Chief Academic Advisor Clifford Jones talks about getting textbooks for American Sign Language, IB mathematics, and courses for fine arts involving presentation skills.

  • Dr. Ryan Moore talks about changing all remaining late-start Mondays to early-release days. Students would be provided lunch and teachers would be given more planning time. Buses would run at earlier times, and the proposal will return next week after further planning.

  • Andrea Cooper Gatewood is suggesting for Chattahoochee Hills Charter school approval to be extended for four years.

  • District 2 Board Member Katie Reeves suggests making grading forms easier for teachers to fill out.

  • District 4 Board Member Franchesca Warren asks how to send this out to the public before the implementation of the proposal in fall 2022.

    • Dr. Ryan Moore replies that they will return with answers for the board in the coming weeks.

  • District 3 Board Member Gail Dean asks for the design for the message to the public regarding the item.

  • Dr. Ryan Moore introduces Board Policy ABBB Exercise of the Fulton County Schools Charter System, and it goes on consent.

  • Dr. Ryan Moore presents GBRC Exempt Employee Workday which goes on consent, and Non-Exempt Employee Workday.

  • District 2 Board Member Katie Reeves asks about feedback to do with the Non-Exempt Employee Workday. Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney replies that they are communicating with employees regularly.

  • District 2 Board Member Katie Reeves asks about employee flexibility with the policy Wade answers that the managers do have some flexibility.

  • Dr. Ryan Moore introduces GBRI Professional/Classified- Leaves of Absence, GBRJ Professional - Arrangement for Substitutes, EC Equipment and Supplies Management, Board Procedure EC Equipment and Supplies Management, and Operating Guideline DICA Replacement of School Property Lost due to Theft, Vandalism or Natural Causes are accepted and go on consent.

  • Chief Operations Officer Noel Maloof presents RFP 401-22 Alpharetta High School Renovation to include a new fitness center and extend a new fitness center at Alpharetta High School, the item goes on consent.

  • Chief Operations Officer Noel Maloof presents Request Board Resolution for Certificate of Completion for Campbell ES Project for a final payment to the construction for the project, it goes on consent.

  • Young introduces Contracting Report for December 2021 for Items Between $100,000 and $1,000,000 requesting contract extensions for various objectives.

  • District 2 Board Member Katie Reeves  asks why the art budget has doubled, Jones replies that consumable expenditure has increased due to online schools. The item is held.

  • The board opens public comment.

  • Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones recognizes several students for excellence including junior E’lissa Anne Jones from Northview for being Girl of the Year with STEAM Studies.

  • Dr. Ryan Moore recognizes the School Governance Team of the Year.

  • The work session is adjourned.
