FCBOE Work Session - September
The Fulton County Board of Education met for their monthly work session at 2 p.m. on Sept. 12, 2023.
District 5 Board Member Kristin McCabe Congratulates Dolvin Elementary School, Findley Oaks Elementary School, and Northview High School for being named to Georgia PBIS distinguished schools.
High School band events are announced at Cambridge High School on Sept. 23.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney goes over information about the ACT acronym for suicide prevention.

The board approved the August Minutes (item 7.1).
The board discussed standing on the 2025 - 2026 Instructional Calendar. The importance of full weeks, as well as longer breaks, was emphasized. The new calendar is also aiming to match with neighboring county’s calendars. The board compared the 2023-2024 calendars with neighboring counties.
District 2 Board Member Lillie Pozalek discussed with the board whether changing parameters and full weeks will ensure the 180-day school year.
Vice President Katha Stuart thanked everyone who worked on the Instructional Calendar. Stuart discussed the surrounding district's take on a balanced calendar. The importance of having uninterrupted weeks was emphasized, along with Monday or Friday being days that are off instead of Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
Franchesca Warren from District 4 discussed mixed opinions on balanced schedules.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney discussed the impact of finding the balance of teacher work days, no school/asynchronous days, and multi-day weekends on a 175-180-day school year plan.
District 5 Board Member Kristin McCabe discussed the effect school breaks will have on child care and AP tests, and whether the school year will begin earlier as a result.
The board explains their plan for future discussions on school breaks.

Board policy IHE promotion and connection was reviewed, along with past EOC waving. This item goes onto consent.
Item 7.05, focusing on fee waivers and waiver waving, goes onto consent.
Item 7.06, which determines whether Crabapple Middle School receives its certificate of completion, goes onto consent.
Item 7.07, discussing the board approval of Fulton County schools funding application goes onto consent.
Item 7.08, which discusses the renovation of Abbotts Ville Elementary, goes on to consent.
Item 7.09, which needs Fulton County approval of the construction contract for Dunwoody Springs Elementary School, goes onto consent.
Item 7.10, Fulton County approval of construction contract for renovated scoreboards, goes onto consent.
Item 7.11, the contracting report was reviewed and went on to consent.
Item 7.12, a contract extension was reviewed and went onto consent.
Item 7.13, which reviewed the financial update related to FY2023, goes onto consent.
Item 7.14, which discusses the monthly capital report, goes onto consent. Adjustments were made to this report.
Item 7.15, discussing the September 2023 budget adjustments, does not go onto consent.
Item 7.16 - the Bankon resolutions, remains for discussion.
Rivertrail Middle School student, Caden Lee, won two National Spelling Bee and Science Championships over the summer.
Fulton County's Contracting Department received an award of recognition for excellence.
