FCBOE Board Meeting - February
The Fulton County Board of Education met for their monthly board meeting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2023.
District 2 Board Member Lillie Pozatek thanked Jones and talked about being a former Special ED teacher. Then asked about who and what the should expect in April about TSI updates.
Jones said they can expect principles to talk about their plans and progress.
Board President and District 6 Board Member Kimberly Dove asks Dr.Looney about additional support for kids whose first language isn’t English during testing season.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney said that they will be bringing innovative practices in the coming months rather than giving those students answers.
Dove asks if they (unclear who) understand how important it is.
Looney says that the county will do whatever is necessary to support these students.
District 7 Board Member Dr. Michelle Morancie asks how the teachers will be mentored during this process as a means to better their teaching with bilingual kids.
Board Vice President District 1 Board Member Katha Stuart speaks on former presentations and how much work they have done to improve. Hopes that this report will someday not be necessary.
Dove thanks Jones and his team for his work and says how they are in the right direction in comparison to the past.
Dove Asks about when the GSATs will be done.
Jones said by April.
District 5 Board Member Kristin McCabe asks about plans about College Park.
Jones said that the plan he talked about is next year’s plan and that how College Park already has another plan.
McCabe asks about the middle schools in College Park and if they are best preparing the children for highschool.
Jones said how they are offering them summer school based on the Milestones results and other testing. Then talks about the transitions such as 5th to 6th grade and how it is hard on kids.
McCabe said how they have talked about considering that groups of kids there remain with the same teacher for years.
District 4 Board Member Franchesca Warren asks how FCS is helping College Park.
Looney said that FCS is disappointed in the results of College Park and how they are working to help them preform better. He then goes on to talk about how attendance impacts students’ success.
Motions pass unanimously.
Stuart comments on 6.01 and 6.02 and how engaged the community was in RISE and the issues that weren’t spoke on. She says how the county appreciates the community.
District 3 Board Member Katie Gregory thanks the community and hopes that they remain involved in FCS.
Warren asks what resources the county is giving the kids who have to transfer if the schools close.
Looney said he does not want to assume a vote. But if the school remains open he calls upon the community to do their best to turn the school around. If the board decides to close the school the county will give the community open arms when it comes to touring schools and that the staff of RISE will be given resources to go to another FCS school.

Warren tells the parents that this decision is hard and that the board felt that it was in the best interest of the children that the RISE charters close. She said that she has asked Looney and the FCS staff to give the students a welcome as they find a new school.’
Marvin L. Dereef Jr. Chief Financial Officer said that Northview HS has a banking resolution found on website.

McCabe asks if FCS keeps a count of the subscriptions that they have each year.
Looney said that they do but it does not ensure that the subscriptions remain the same each year.
The board has no questions about the information reports.
