FCBOE Board Meeting - February

The Fulton County Board of Education met for their monthly board meeting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 17, 2022.
  • The FCS Board of Education begins with the Pledge of Allegiance and approves the agenda for tonight’s meeting.

  • Dr. Looney presented his superintendent’s report which this month focuses on campus safety efforts across the county.

  • The board members highlight positives in their community. District 5 Board Member Linda McCain highlights a student at River Trail who has won the district spelling bee and will move onto the state. McCain then notes the Northview robotics team who will be moving to the world robotics competition. 

  • Dr. Looney calls on Chief Academic Officer Cliff Jones to recognize Sandtown Middle School, Cliftondale Elementary School, Tri-Cities High School, Stonewall Tell Elementary School, and Liberty Point Elementary School for various student and staff accomplishments. 

  • The board hears public comment. 

  • Dr. Looney calls on Chief Financial Officer Cliff Jones to introduce the Fulton County Tax Commissioner Dr. Arthur E. Ferdinand. Dr. Ferdinand starts by explaining the county operating tax collection rate over the past few years. He then explains the similarities between the tax collections of the Fulton County Schools Board and the Atlanta Public Schools Board. 

  • The board members and Dr. Looney thank Dr. Ferdinand for his work. 

  • Dr. Looney calls on Chief Financial Officer Cliff Jones to introduce DeWayne Pinkey, the Fulton County Tax Assessor. Pinkey gives an update on assessments for Fulton County properties. 

  • District 6 Board Member Kimberly Dove asks a question about when the report will be released. Pinkey responds by saying there is no official date yet but his team is working on it. 

  • District 3 Board Member Gail Dean asks a question about appeals. Pinkey responds by saying all appeals will be processed by May. 

  • District 2 Board Member Katie Reeves asks about how long it takes for a multi-unit property to be added to the tax roll. 

  • Dr. Looney calls on Gyimah Whitaker, the Deputy Chief Academic Officer, to give the FCS Bridge report. Whitaker starts by giving an update on summer learning programs.

  • Dove asks if parents can enroll students who did not fail their grade level. Whitaker says that they can.

Dr. Looney supplements information by saying that the will make it a priority for children who did not pass but they will allow children who did not fail as long as they have the staffing. 

  • Whitaker announces that there will be a summer graduation for students who pass high school after remediating with summer school. 

  • Dean raises a query about transportation. Whitaker responds that they are working on providing families transportation and meals. 

  • McCain asks about the plan to help students who opt out of summer school catch up. Dr. Looney says that the parents who wave their child understand that retention is a possibility. 

  • Yalanda Bell, Executive Director of Academic Programs, continues the FCS Bridge update. She starts by presenting the new programs for behavioral issues

  • Bell says that the stakeholders' survey about the Bridge plan is now out and will be available until Feb. 25th. Finally, Bell says that the financial reports on our on the Bridge to Success website.

  • Dr. Looney reads the motions for the closed session action items. The motion carried unanimously.

  • Dr. Looney reads the motion for the consent items. The motion carried unanimously. 

  • Chief Financial Officer Marvin Dereef starts presenting the discussion items and motions for the contracting report. The motion carried unanimously.

  • Dereef motions the budget report. The motion carried unanimously.

  • Dereef motions the banking report. The motion carried unanimously.

  • Dereef motions the employee travel report. The motion carried unanimously. 

  • The information reports are presented. 

  • The meeting is adjourned.
