The world continues to move into a more creative and innovative direction each day. The world of fashion is no different. Many people try to embark on a path to success in the fashion industry and struggle, but junior Alejandra Vidales is getting a head start on her journey.

In middle school, Vidales started to develop a sudden liking for styling her clothes. She discovered the show “Pose” and loved its unique approach to different styles of fashion that she did not know about herself.

In her free time, Vidales likes to hand sew and embroider different pieces. Although she has used a sewing machine before, she did not prefer it as much as she enjoys hand sewing. She could see herself selling her craft in the future, but feels her work needs more improvement for now.

After high school, Vidales hopes to move to New York for college and study at Parsons New School or the Fashion Institute of Technology. She is unsure of what to major in but is leaning towards majoring in fashion journalism or fashion design. Fashion journalism gives her a way to speak on topics she loves and feels the need to speak on, but fashion design is more hands-on and engaging.

As Vidales continues to grow, so does her style. Unlike some, she does not fully conform to specific styling tips and goes with the flow. She uses her style as a way to express herself and feel confident.

“I honestly just look to anyone for style inspiration no matter who it is,” Vidales said. “I would describe my style as androgynous with a flair and twist.”

She would like to find ways to cater to everyone while incorporating her androgynous style. Vidales wants to make a name for herself in the industry and continue to do good.

“I want to change the industry for the better,” Vidales said. “Body inclusivity has always been a big thing for me and something I am passionate about.”

Although Vidales’ family has a history of taking on more traditional jobs, she wants to enter the creative field with the support of her family. She embarked into the fashion world with a little help from her mom to discover her own style and explore her clothing choices. Her grandma also does the occasional sewing job for her.

Vidales hopes to see herself in the future writing for fashion publications, preferably, in New York-the heart of the fashion scene.

“I like and feel [that] I’m good at fashion,” Vidales said. “I like the fact that it will always be there progressing, and I can learn more as I go.”

She had initially planned on attending a fashion camp at Parsons New School or Savannah College of Arts and Design, but because of the state of the pandemic, she is unsure of whether she will attend. She hopes to spread her name in the industry and make connections early on that might last a lifetime.
