Review: "It Chapter Two"

Rayyah Shakur, Staff Writer

Despite “It Chapter Two’s” hyped release, the movie didn’t get the greatest reviews from fans and critics. Earning only a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, it seemed to receive a mix of disappointed and outstanding reviews.

In this horror sequel, viewers follow the reunion of the Losers Club who’ve returned to the town of Derry to put an end to ‘It’, the clown of every child’s nightmares. Whilst the production of the film was great, there were some things about the movie that many disliked. The plot was rather hard to follow sometimes when the movie jumped between each character’s experience with ‘It’. Another confusing aspect was the role of Henry Bowers, the teen bully. His reappearance in the film as an older, psych ward patient was almost thrown into the plot with no real purpose. Other than the fact that he added to a few jump scares, his story and purpose were never elaborated upon.

Along with the placement of useless characters, this sequel added to Bill and Beverly’s childhood romance with a twist. Although it was sweet, it confused the viewer on their relationship when also going between her and Ben.

Although the movie had its negatives, the execution was successful in scaring its viewers. It gave an important message on what it means to not care about being somewhat of an outcast. Along with uplifting those who seem lost in their fears, hopes or dreams, the movie gave viewers the real reason bullies bully. The weakest ones throw their self-hate and insecurities on everyone else so that they don’t have to face their own issues. “It Chapter Two” sparked multiple emotions that meshed well. From fear to anger, sadness to satisfaction, the movie ended the tale of the terrifying clown well.
